UFC 93 just got that much better today as Dana White announced the matchup of former champs in the 185 lbs division between Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson. Shogun will also try to resurrect his career with a fight against Mark Coleman. This is going to be one exciting event. Can’t wait. MMAJunkie has the story.

Anderson Silva To Retire In A Year?

I couldn’t believe it either, but according to Yahoo! sports, Anderson Silva will retire next year. That is simply a shock as there are many mega fights that Anderson can be a part of.

I’ll retire next year, I already gave my all. I don’t need to prove anything for anyone and within one year I’ll put my gloves aside

While Anderson has not been a draw like Lesnar, Couture, or Liddell, he is the best pound for pound MMA fighter in the world. But it seems domination brings boredom as Silva will retire after 5 or 6 more fights, if not sooner. But things will change in the sports, and people unretire or change their minds. Let’s see if Silva keeps his promise.

Houston Alexander Done?

It seems so at this point. Alexander was at his worst against Eric Schafer and was submitted with only 7 seconds remaining in round one. Alexander had a great start and threw some good punches, but with his career on the line he was taken down easily by Schafer and submitted subsequently. I like Houston. I think he is a great guy. But with no ground game, he simply has no real future in the MMA world. He can knock people out. That’s for sure. But a true elite 205 fighter should have no business losing to Eric Schafer in such a dominating fashion. Good luck to Houston in the future.

Frank Mir Gets “Tuf” On Lesnar

It didn’t take too long for Frank Mir to talk about his disapproval of Lesnar getting a title shot against Randy Couture. When asked about what he thought about Brock Lesnar getting a title shot, he was blunt about it:

I think that Lesnar’s name is the only reason he’s getting a title match

I personally like Frank. I think he is a great MMA fighter. But sometimes he gives this impression that he think he is bigger than he really is to the UFC. Now I understand guys like Werdum or the Nog talking badly about Lesnar, but Mir used Lesnar as a stepping stone to get a title shot he doesn’t serve in my opinion. Not only that, he got his Ultimate Fighter gig because of his fight with Lesnar, so for a guy who has benefited the most from Lesnar, he is certainly disrespectful. And he should’ve been stopped if the referee didn’t have that bogus call against Lesnar, but that’s another story. You be the judge.

Dana White To Alexander: Beat Eric Schafer or Else

If Houston Alexander needed any extra motivation for his upcoming fight at Ultimate Fight Night on Spike TV, he certainly got it from Dana white. Dan was clear about the prospect of another loss by Houston Alexander:

He needs a way. He desperately needs a win. Another loss and he’s going to have to go out and start working his way back up to the UFC

Houston was impressive early in his UFC career but lost two bad fights (one in 8 seconds to the Sandman). Schafer is a very dangerous fighter who can certainly submit Houston, but I still think Houston should be able to knock him out if he avoids getting into a jujitsu game with Eric. Having said that, I am going to on a limb and predict that Eric Schafer will win in 2 rounds via submission. Sorry Houston.
